2016 Group 49 Write-a-thon On Sunday December 11, at our annual day of writing letters for prisoners of conscience , Amnesty members, people from the community and from the First Unitarian Church came together during a long afternoon of writing letters. The event was Open House, with people welcomed to come whenever they could, and leave whenever they needed to. We offered refreshments, and to enliven a serious afternoon, we held several drawings for prizes, with support from friends in our business community. We wrote and mailed 380 letters, though the true number is larger than that because some people took letters with them to finish at home, and to mail themselves. Our letters went to many countries, on behalf of many prisoners of conscience and others at risk. read more here
Group 49 of Amnesty International cordially invites everyone to our 29th annual letter- writing event. Every year, around International Human Rights Day, we hold a “Write-a-thon” to generate hundreds of letters on behalf of prisoners of conscience and other individuals at risk around the world. This is part of Amnesty International’s global Write For Rights (W4R) campaign, started in 2007. The Write for Rights campaign is our movement’s largest global event.
Our event will be held on Sunday, December 11, 1-5 pm Open House, the Parish House at the First Unitarian Church of Providence, One Benevolent Street, Providence, 02906.
Our Write-a-Thon is free and open to the public. Pre-registration not required.
Please join us on December 11th to write letters on behalf of prisoners of conscience and human rights defenders in Iran, China, and more. The cases we will be writing for are profiled in this year’s Write For Rights campaign.
All cases and writing materials will be provided. We will also have a guest speaker. Come for refreshments, prizes, inspiration, fellowship!
If you have any questions, please contact me at (401) 831-0720.
We look forward to seeing you!
